WaterRower A Perfect Aerobic Pursuit
Posted in Exercise Equipment Advice on December 8th, 2010 by Scott Laurent
I found the WaterRower to be a big winner in many respects. First of all, what a great opportunity to get almost 85% of your muscles involved in a cardio exercise, making rowing one of the purest and most efficient ways to work cardio and strength at the same time.
Rowing maximizes gain, while minimizing time and can burn in excess of 1000 calories per hour. And rowing does so with a far lower perceived level of exertion than other aerobic exercises
Rowing is joint friendly in that it moves the joints through a full range of motion and does so with minimal impact and no body weight on the joints, making it one of the best exercises for joint pain sufferers. It’s also good for the posture and relaxing to the mind at the same time!
The problem with most rowers is that they can be hard on the neck back and shoulders, since your joints are really compromised when going from fully extended to fully contracted while fighting the drag of resistance, which is either wind driven or mechanical. The WaterRower helps offset this compromise to the joints, with a very unique fluid resistance that works with your strength curve (muscle involvement matches resistance) and simulates real rowing with real water. The bonus of hearing the swirling of the water in the tank only adds to the motivation and stimulation you would not normally get from a traditional rower.
So as a trainer it really counts that I can recommend a WaterRower for a client to use more often during the week than any other rower that I have found.
Here is a good demonstration video of the 3 positions and 3 phases of the rowing action using the WaterRower rowing machine.
